Choosing keywords is more complicated than simply choosing the keywords that you assume people search for most often. Doing so usually results in lack of traffic and/or lack of sales. Either you might not get sufficient traffic from those keywords or those keywords might not convert well. Here are some metrics to consider for choosing the best keywords to target with your website.

Keyword Search Volume

It is very important to know which keywords get frequent searches through the major search engines or Search engine top positioning. There is no point in targeting a keyword that gets very few daily searches. You need keywords that will produce enough traffic to sustain your business. Of course you don’t want to just sustain your business – you want it to thrive and flourish.

Keyword Competitiveness

Unfortunately you can’t just target the highest volume keywords and automatically get great search engine top rankings for those keywords. Higher volume keywords are usually the most competitive within a niche. When a keyword is more competitive your website needs to be more relevant than all the other websites that are targeting that keyword. To make the search engines think that your website is more relevant for a particular keyword you need to wisely use that keyword throughout your website. More importantly, you need lots of quality websites to link to your website using that keyword as link anchor text.

Keyword Relevancy

When you start compiling a potential keyword list, you will notice that some keywords are highly relevant and some may only be mildly relevant. Obviously you will want to target the keywords that are most relevant to your website.

Summary

Do not take keyword research lightly. It is an extremely important part of marketing a website. Without the right keywords, you will not succeed. So take the time to do thorough keyword research before you start doing any website marketing.

You need to consider important keyword selection metrics: search volume, competitiveness and relevancy. Combine all of that research to choose the keywords that have the best balance of all three metrics. A keyword is only good if it can satisfy all your needs.

One of the most important factors in website optimization is your title tag. This is written in the HTML code for your page in the “head” section. Many seo companies make the mistake of simply using their company name on every page of their site. This is a costly error, since today, search engines use the title plus key words in your content, more than ever to determine your standings. Here are some tips for getting better standings through the proper use of title tags.

In addition to ranking, your title tag will appear in the title bar of web browsers for visitors who open your page. Having descriptive title tag is important for visitors as well as for search engines.

A Word About Keywords

Before building any web site or even any web page, it is important that you choose 3 or 4 prime key words and a number of lesser words as well. The web is full of keyword selection tools but we suggest you begin with an excellent keyword tool that is free from Google. We cannot cover this process in this article but we have other articles that go inter this critical area. For each page of your site, select two or three major keywords you believe people will use to find your page in the search engines.

What To Put In Your Tag

Many web sites just have the company name in the title tag. This is great if you are so well known that people will use your name to search when they want to find your site. For example, www.cocacola.com. However, if your company name is less well known than Coca Cola, GE, IBM and others you will do far better to put your name, your city and two or three of your primary keywords. An example for my company web-star.biz might be , “web-star marketing affordable consulting”. This title is 60 characters in length. It describes the prime keyword for the page and identifies the company name.
